For long a magnet for travelers, attracting up to 1.5 million visitors annually, Dubrovnik is now grappling with the severe effect of overtourism, as the influx of tourists is adversely affecting the quality of life for local residents. To tackle this challenge, the authorities have previously explored different measures, such as implementing visitor quotas to control entry into the walled city.

According to the Belgian daily newspaper HLN, the latest step in the authorities’ effort to strike a balance between tourism and local well-being is to ban wheeled suitcases. Mayor Mato Frankovic explained that the decision was influenced by the numerous complaints received from residents regarding the noise generated by the suitcase wheels strolling through the city’s iconic cobblestone streets.

However, the authorities are not leaving tourists stranded without a solution. To cater to the needs of travelers who book their place of accommodation within the old town, an innovative service will be introduced early this autumn. Under this system, tourists will be able to drop off their luggage at specific locations near the entrance of the Old Town and, for a fee, have their belongings transported to their respective hotel/apartment.

Moreover, Dubrovnik plans to expand this luggage transport service to the local airport in the near future, ensuring visitors a hassle-free journey without the burden of having to carry their suitcases through the city. As the year progresses, this new regulation is anticipated to bring about a quieter, more enjoyable experience for residents and visitors within the enchanting walls of Dubrovnik’s historic core. Whether it is bound to work or not, it remains to be seen!
